The "Nördlinger Ries Crater" - birth of a new landscape
About 15 million years ago a stone meteorite of nearly one kilometer in diameter impacted the Alb Plateau close to the present-day city of Nördlingen in Bavaria, Germany. At an impact velocity of 70.000 km/h the stone meteorite crashed through the earth´s crust. It produced a crater of 25 km in diameter - the Nördlinger Ries Crater.
